Historical & Cultural Context

A meeting of artistic worlds /

Near Datong in Shanxi, the Yungang Grottoes were carved during the Northern Wei period, from the fifth to the early sixth century. Their Buddhist sculptures bring South and Central Asian artistic influences into dialogue with Chinese traditions.

Why it matters /

Yungang offers a way to understand how belief and art travel, and how they change through encounters with another culture. Its stone figures preserve a history of exchange as well as an achievement of Chinese Buddhist art.
